Tens of thousands of people, all dressed in purple, packed the streets of Lima on Tuesday. The Catholic worshippers were venerating a historic religious image known as the Lord of the Miracles. The mass procession is often described as the largest act of devotion in Peru, and possibly even Latin America. For many Peruvians, the image is the highest symbol of hope and overcoming adversity. SOUNDBITE: Pensioner, Ofelia Fuentes, saying (Spanish): "It's a miracle, I had a stroke and was in a wheelchair, now I'm standing. The Lord of the Miracles is very miraculous. Why do you think so many people come here?" Tradition says the image of the Lord of the Miracles was first painted on a wall in 1651. An earthquake in 1655, which destroyed most parts of the city, left the wall intact, leading to the popular belief in the divine qualities of the image.
