Maryam Mirzakhani, award-winning mathematician, dies at 40

Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and only woman to receive the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for mathematics, has died, said officials at Stanford University, the California school where she taught. Nathan Frandino reports.

Officials say celebrated mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani died on Saturday after battling cancer. She was the first and only woman to receive the Fields Medal, a prize honoring mathematicians under 40 who make major contributions. She earned the accolade for her work in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces. The Tehran-born Mirzakhani gained recognition as a teenager competing in the International Mathematical Olympiad. She later went to Harvard and joined the faculty at Stanford. Mirzakhani was 40 years old.
