Olympic athletes make on-field gestures

Silver medallist Raven Saunders of the United States raises her arms in an X above her head on the podium after the women's shot put, August 1, 2021. Saunders later said the gesture was intended as a sign of support for the oppressed. The IOC launched an investigation but suspended it after the death of Saunders' mother.

The IOC last month relaxed its Rule 50 to allow gestures on the field, providing athletes do so without disruption and with respect for fellow competitors. However, it still forbids the expression of political statements in venues and on the podium.

"Some of the athletes communicated and decided upon this symbol to show solidarity for each other and support the oppressed," he explained in an Instagram story. "For me I personally wore the symbol as a demonstration against rule 50," he said.
