Actor Omar Sharif has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, his agent confirmed to Reuters. Holly Rubenstein reports.

Omar Sharif, the award-winning actor, has been diagnosed Alzheimer's disease, his agent has confirmed. He told Reuters, "He is living in Egypt these days and he is being looked after by his son Tarek and others. But his son is really taking care of him now." Sharif, who is 83 and was born in Alexandria, Egypt, is best known for his role in the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia, for which he earned an Oscar nomination and won two Golden Globe Awards. He won a further Golden Globe three years later for Doctor Zhivago. His son told Spain's El Mundo newspaper at the weekend, "The loss of memory affects above all specific things, details like when he was in a specific place or who he acted with in a specific film."
