Oregon coastal city ready to be first in welcoming the eclipse

Residents of Depoe Bay, Oregon, are gearing up to be the first U.S. city see the upcoming Great American Eclipse. Nathan Frandino reports.

Welcome to Depoe Bay, Oregon - home to 1,500 residents, a single traffic light, AND the first stop of the upcoming Great American Eclipse. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BARBARA LEFF, MAYOR OF DEPOE BAY, SAYING: "This is our adventure for the year. Actually, maybe for the Millennia." Mayor Barbara Leff says the city began planning four years ago. The city's hotels have been sold out for months. And crowd estimates range from thousands to hundreds of thousands. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BARBARA LEFF, MAYOR OF DEPOE BAY, SAYING: "The current population is approximately 1,500. It might grow twice as large, it might grow 20 times as large. The fact is, we have no idea." The total eclipse will start here on August 21st, before it cuts through 14 states to the Atlantic, the first time in 99 years the spectacle will span the entire continental U.S. At O'Connell Gallery and Gifts, owner Pat O'Connell is capitalizing on the event with commemorative t-shirts. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PAT O'CONNELL, OWNER OF O'CONNELL GALLERY AND GIFTS, SAYING: "I decided that I would make it like a rock shirt and that people would keep it for the rest of their lives." The city is also taking safety measures. Three fire stations will be open instead of just one, each handing out protective glasses for free. On the water, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Andrew Port says they'll be monitoring boater traffic as the tidal wave of visitors floods the city. (SOUNDBITE) (English) COAST GUARD SPOKESMAN ANDREW PORT AT STATION DEPOE BAY, SAYING: "Just making sure that everybody's as prepared as everybody can be, and so far so good, everything's going great." Going great for a minutes-long event anticipated to be a once in a lifetime experience.
