Chaos and injuries in rural South Korea on Thursday (September 7). Hundreds of protesters clashing with police as the military rolled out the remainder of Washington's controversial THAAD anti-missile system in the village of Seongju. It's the latest in preparations against North Korea's missile program, as pressure from Washington ratchets up following Pyongyang's latest nuclear test on Sunday (September 3). THAAD is designed to shoot down missiles mid-flight and is no stranger to critics from in and outside South Korea. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN, GENG SHUANG, SAYING: "I would like to reiterate, China's firm opposition to the United States deploying THAAD in South Korea is clear, consistent and steadfast." Despite it's objections to THAAD, North Korea's only real ally is still committed to ending the escalating nuclear crisis, according to Donald Trump, who held a phone call with China's leader on Wednesday (September 6). (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: President Xi would like to do something. We'll see whether or not he can do it. But we will not be putting up with what's happening in North Korea. Trump has been vague on the possibility of military action against North Korea, but for now, at least, he's looking at other options. Washington wants to freeze Kim Jong-Un's assets, slap him with a travel ban and get an oil embargo imposed on Pyongyang by the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, global leaders are looking ahead to Saturday (September 9) in anticipation of more trouble. (SOUNDBITE) (Korean) SOUTH KOREAN PRIME MINISTER, LEE NAK-YON, SAYING: "North Korea may launch another intercontinental ballistic missile, on September 9 when the country celebrates its founding anniversary." So far, sanctions have done little to stop Kim Jong-Un from continuing the race towards his ultimate goal: perfecting a nuclear missile that could reach the united states.
