Comic book adaptation Runaways, which launched in Los Angeles on Thursday (November 16), tells the familiar story of angst-driven teenagers rebelling against their parents. However, what's maybe not so familiar is that the teens' parents are all criminal masterminds and are, for mysterious reasons, sacrificing people in strange rituals. The original story was created by Brian K. Vaughan who was asked by Marvel Comics to bring new readers into the industry. SOUNDBITE Executive Producer, Josh Schwartz, saying (English): "He did so many things so well, starting with the idea, this premise that every teenager thinks their parents are evil - what if your parents actually were? And it's just such a universal concept whether your parents won't let you drive the car or you caught them sacrificing a human in the basement. I think that's what really transcends about what he's done." After the kids make this discovery about their parents, they also find out that they share their gifts and abilities. The teen group, which now includes an alien lesbian, a gothic sorceress and a bookish feminist with a pet dinosaur, set out to bring down their parents and stop their nefarious activities. SOUNDBITE actress, Virginia Gardner, saying (English): "I think first of all having a cast of six really diverse superheroes is already going to help people immensely and let alone having a gay character on top of that is just a bonus." SOUNDBITE actress Ariela Barer, saying (English): "Specifically the more people can find themselves within it, the more people can find their characters to view the lens of the show through and I think that's a great experience because growing up I didn't have a lot of superheroes I could look up to. I know if I was growing up today, I'd look at Gert and I'd look at Molly and I would just be so happy. I would be the toughest little girl and nobody would tell me what to do." Runaways take off on Hulu on November 21.
